Unlucky Charms Redbox Review

Just rented Full Moon's latest film Unlucky Charms from Redbox. It's the story of five beautiful wannabe models competing in a Top Model like reality show contest in an old mansion. Somebody on the show controls a magical charm bracelet that can summon and control Irish demons. The demons have a heart of gold and don't want be dominated by an evil master and fight back.

The plot is kind of standard and I've seen Full Moon use this device before. The story is good though and I was held in suspense as to what was going to happen next. What really makes this movie excel is the fine cast. At first I was disappointed because based off the cover I thought Phil Fondacaro was going to have a lead role. I quickly got over my disappointment because midget actor Nathan Philips does a fine acting job. Masuimi Max is an incredible asset to Full Moon with her stunning good looks, acting talent and fun personality. Jeryl Prescott Sales of Walking Dead puts in a terrific performance as the mean Tyra Banks style diva in charge. The rest of the cast is full of semi-famous actors who all excel. Kudos to director Charles Band for his skilled directing of the cast however some scenes I felt were too dark.

Included on the DVD is a wonderful Videozone like back in the day showing interviews, bloopers, behind the scenes and some Full Moon news. Kicking off the DVD is an announcement about the future of Full Moon. Very good news but it left me with two important questions. Will Full Moon's streaming service be available on Roku and will there be an affiliate program? There is over 5 million people using Roku now and other film companies such as Something Weird have a subscription based channel. I spend many hours in front of the computer, when I enjoy a movie I want it on a big screen and relaxing on the couch! Troma is streaming their catalog for free but I have barely watched any of them for this reason.

So definitely check out Unlucky Charms! I'm tempted to call it one of Full Moon's better films but really all of their new releases have been top notch lately!

Mormo Test Footage! Please comment!!

This footage started off as a script for a movie I was going to make. Then I had an idea about a much better story and decided to make that movie instead. I hadn't written the script yet though and I wanted to shoot something so I decided to just shoot some test footage from the script I had already wrote. My plan was to charge to see the test footage then use that money to make the movie I really wanted to make. Well the test footage really sucked so I decided to just ask people to make a comment on it instead of trying to raise money with it. Making movies is hard, I might just write a book instead IDK? Please comment!!!!

Dirty Kid Discount Video

Dirty Kid Discount is an eight (!) piece folk punk band from the Pacific North West. Saw them when I was at the Shakedown Bar in San Diego. It was cool because the bar was practically empty but these guys kinda filled up the bar with themselves! There was some sound issues, I think the sound guy was stressed plugging everyone in. They sound really good though and were totally fun. Gotta love any band with an accordion, it's like my favorite instrument! They recently got a shout out from Operation Ivy's FB page.

Animal Train - Commercial Suicide EP Review

Animal Train is a super cool, super friendly punk band from Austin Texas. Really enjoyed seeing them live so when they asked me to review their EP I was stoked! It's on bandcamp and you can listen to it here.

The first thing that crosses my mind is I would really like to know the meaning behind the EP's title. The older I get the more I just wanna make money and in my money grubbing manner, "commercial" is the highest compliment I can give. I say "Your work looks very commercial." meaning they could possibly get some money there. I wrote about a post asking "Can you love punk and money at the same time?" here.

The music on this album is awesome. It's my favorite kind of punk, raw and aggressive rock and roll. Really strong vocals kinda like a punk Janis Joplin or something. The drums and guitars are played with precision but still chaotic enough to make the music fresh and exciting. What really stands out for me are the intelligent and positive lyrics talking about the importance of the D.I.Y. reality.

Def check this album out!

Hot Dog Sandwich is a band that has been around for many years. At one time they had four members but now they have two, husband and wife. They also run a comic book and record store in Boise which is where this video was shot. I told them I could help them build a website. Really cool people and awesome band!

Porkchop Roku Review

Watched the movie Porkchop on the Midnight Pulp channel on Roku. It's a pretty standard story line, a group of young people go somewhere to drink and have sex then get fucked up by a masked killer. Unoriginality is the point though as this an 80's throwback actually set in the 80's. It's a horror comedy and has some good gore as well as some good boobs. Probably the funniest thing is that the nerd character has a robot he takes on the camping trip that constantly puts him down in front of his crush. If you have any spare money the film maker is making a sequel called Pig Girl right now and is raising a small amount of money for the props and stuff they need. Visit the fund raising campaign here.

New Jerkwadz Song!!

7/15/2013

Recently went to Boise to go to Jimmy Sinn's birthday show. It was at Hot Dog Headquarters which is an awesome comics and collectables store. Jerkwadz played and here is video of a new song. Jerkwadz have lost a drummer and gained an extra guitar player since I saw them last. The guitar player is Brandon from the band Position High which is also a cool band and Mormo supporter. I got to catch up with Jimmy Sinn and he said he was interested in doing a new Jerkwadz DVD so that may mean work for me in the future! Also Jimmy offered to do an evil acoustic theme song for Mormo so I was super stoked about that. Keep an eye on this blog for for more videos from this show coming soon!

Ghoul Television: Why?

Coming home from an awesome punk show tonight I was informed by a gay AM talk show host that Zimmerman was found innocent. I got home and raced to my computer and made the meme you see above. I posted it on Facebook and it got one like (Woo Hoo!). Moments later I thought to myself, what does this trial have to do with Mormo Zine and why am I so invested in it that I spent 20 minutes making a meme about it?

Spring Breakers Redbox Review

7/10/2013

Picked up Spring Breakers at the redbox. It's by Harmony Korine, director of Gummo and Trash Humpers. I was really looking forward to this film and I got to say it scared me more then any recent horror flick. The first half is a whirlwind nightmare of everything I lost when I left San Diego. Beautiful women, the beach, drinking, weed, cocaine, parties and fun. It's left to the viewer to piece together the narrative, with short segment spliced into the wild party footage often out of order. Some of the story is told in voice over either monologues or phone calls home to the family.

I don't want to say too much about the story. I find Korine's films very challenging and half the fun is putting together the story for yourself. Halfway into the movie James Franco delivers a power house performance as a gangster who leads the girls into more serious crime. Spring Breakers is a collage of beautiful bikini clad young woman partying their asses off and committing serious crimes. If you are not down with that there is something wrong you! Check this out!
