Bad Brains Live At CBGB

Watched Bad Brains Live At CBGB on Midnight Pulp channel on Roku. I had heard Bad Brains a few times but considered them to hardcore for my taste. I more of a sloppy rock n roll type guy. This film gave me a new appreciation of the band.

First off just seeing all of the excitement in the crowd looks like so much fun. The musicianship is also incredible. The lead singer is so full of energy and has such a great voice. Also the drummer is very talented to be able to drum that fast.

The film was also very well shot by the camera crew using multiple cameras capturing the band and the pit. Made me proud of the punk camera work I've done. Some shows seem so historic and there's usually just a small crowd of people so loaded they'll never remember it right, so it's nice to capture these special performance where they will be documented for all to see. Here's the full movie:

Animal Train Punk Band

Animal Train is a punk rock band from Austin Texas. I caught them at a Shakedown Bar show in San Diego. I used to work at the bar back when it was called Rhythm Lounge. The show was awesome because it was all touring bands. This was also a bad thing because no local band brought there friends so there was a pretty small crowd. The Punk Rock Princess from Whatever 68 Radio was there though, I think she was doing a live stream for the radio show.

Animal Train was really good! Just fast, loud and in your face punk rock and roll. I was smoking cigarettes with the lead singer and was very down to earth and enjoying being on tour and everything it entails. Animal Train seem like a punk community as family type people, offering a place to stay to the rest of the bands if they ever come to Austin and genuinely taking interest in meeting people and networking. My dumb ass was down to my last few vacation dollars and couldn't even afford a CD but Animal Train was kind enough to give me a sticker, button and info to download their album for free. Their philosophy is D.I.Y. = freedom and it really seemed to be working out for them. You can name your own price to download their album here.

The Purge Movie Review

The Purge is a right wing dark fantasy with a splash of Hollywood liberalism thrown in. You could also call it a home invasion horror flick with a splash of sci-fi. It takes place in the near future where America's new founding fathers have made it legal to commit any violent crime with class 4 or under weapons for 12 hours one night a week. Ethan Hawke plays a home security top salesman locking up tight his kids and wife to safely ride out the purge. See, the wealthy can afford security and good weapons while the poor get hunted and cleansed. Problem is Hawke's bleeding heart kid lets a homeless black dude hide out in the house. Along comes a gang of preppy college kids who demand dibs on cleansing black dude. Terror and suspense ensues...

It's a pretty good flick but there are some major plot holes. The preppy rich kids are very weak. Sure the masks probably spook teens in the audience but anybody who's ever worn a mask knows they inhibit vision and are generally a pain in the ass to wear. Not good for hunting the most dangerous game I would think. Also when you are hunting a man and wife armed with heavy guns I don't think you're gonna do a bunch of ironic creepy crawl silly games. Kill mother fuckers then go kill more mother fuckers. Hey it's only one night a year.

Also on a serious note, Hollywood I spend a lot of money on your product. If you put out an R rated horror film, tits or GTFO. Not kidding.

It has a satisfying ending full of twists and turns. If you see every horror movie that comes out this year, see The Purge.

Goofbook #5 Zine Review

Got this zine as well as 'Funny To Me' by R.L. Wallace in the mail. Super crude, weird and funny comix. I'm gonna so far as to say this style of art is one of my personal favorites. Since I got my first underground publishing material, stick man and doodle style comix have just really spoken to me. Real random thoughts turned in simplistic cartoons. I don't know but I love this stuff! The author is a super cool dude living the zinester dream and always includes a nice personal note. Also came with a catalog of underground music cassette tapes.

I Got Raped By An Elephant On The Moon

Catchy headline huh? And shocking picture too, I mean that is a BIG elephant! Maybe this caught your eye and you just had to click to hear the rest of story. This is what http://www.xojane.com/ was counting on when they posted this story:

Picture
This is truly terrible! A little girl was raped at Disney World and no one cared? Shame on Disney World! Everyone should know about this injustice so we better share on facebook, right? Thing is it never happened. When you read the article you find out a different story. Turns out it was a 21+ college student working at Disney World who went to a party with a co-worker, got drunk, went home with guy and said no but sex happened anyway hence the rape.

Don't get me wrong, I'm anti-rape just like everyone else. I just think attempts at viral traffic like this don't help the cause at all. I walk away from this article questioning the validity of the rape the author claims. If she was willing to mislead people to get attention to her article is it possible she did the same thing when she was employed by Disney World?

What do you think? Is claiming a child was raped in order to get more visitors to your website out of line? Leave a comment below.

Satan Was A Lady '01 Roku Review

Was pretty stoked to see this movie on the Midnight Pulp channel on Roku. Doris Wishman is a sexplotation film director who I first read about in my VHS Guide when I was a kid and later in the Re/Search book Incredibly Strange Film. Doris is best known for directing the Chesty Morgan films in the 70's. She must have an interesting person because she's pretty good at making sleazy bad girl/booby movies.

In this movie we see big hair lead character Cleo as a stripper, prostitute, black mailer, father and son seducer and murderer. While she is applying her trade we get long and I mean LONG musical numbers from her Roy Orbison wannabe boyfriend. Also through out the film she stares longingly at a mink coat in a store window. There's barely any plot so I don't want to give away anymore. Check this one out when you feel weird late at night!

Paste Eater #4 Zine Review

Paste Eater #4 is a half page zine filled with poetry, short stories, mixed media art, collage and a little magick. The envelope it came in was stuff with bits of pieces of paper and stickers and fliers! This would be a great zine to pick up if you are looking to get published as they seem to really support the artists and list addresses for every contributor. Definitely super weird and surreal!

Superman's Super Shameful Past

Everybody is stoked to see the new Man Of Steel Superman movie. I know I am! There is some controversy over the new suit though. Will the new suit ruin Superman? For me though Superman's reputation was all ready ruined back in 1980.

In the previews for Man Of Steel we see Kevin Costner playing Superman's foster father. He discusses morality with young Superman. Superman needs to decide what kind of man he's going to grow up to be. Is it morally correct to let a school bus full of children die in order to hide his super human abilities? Makes me wonder if the producers of the Superman 2 movie had any kind of morality crisis when they excepted money in exchange for Marlboro cigarette product placement.
Picture
Yes, Superman was used to market cigarettes to kids. Several times through out the film. Here we see intrepid reporter Lois Lane puffing away on a Marlboro:

Comic books help kids understand the difference between right and wrong and what it means to be a hero. Is it wrong to use superheros to market unhealthy products such as cigarettes and junk food? Please leave a comment below letting me know your opinion.

It's fun getting weird stuff in the mail!

The purpose of this article is to encourage you to start the fun hobby of sending away for things in the mail. It's a weird world out there and you can get all kinds of interesting and personal alternative media. Everybody is passionate about something and many people self publish zines about their hobbies and interests. You can get these small magazines by sending out a dollar or two or better yet by publishing your own zine and trading.

My own mail hobby started when I was in my young teens in the early 90's. I guess this was a golden age for zines. Two zines I subscribed to and loved were Thrift Score, a thrift store themed zine, and a Crispin Glover fan zine. The main source where I found addresses and reviews was a magazine called Factsheet Five. It was basically a big catalog of stuff you could mail for. The other source was a SubGenius book called High Weirdness By Mail. Upon doing a little research I found a webpage with updated links to most of the publishers featured in High Weirdness By Mail.

Being the horny teenager that I was also mailed away for anything with naked ladies or that had to do with sex. In the back of photography magazines there was addresses that for a few bucks would send you glossy photographs of nude models. I ordered catalogs of pornographic videos and magazines. I even subscribed to some catalogs of mail order brides.

So yeah, the early 90's was definitely a golden age for the mail. Mail order and zines are still very much alive though! I receive many interesting zines in the mail to this day. Recently I have received a wonderful new style of zine, a pocket zine with several pages that is comprised of one piece of paper folded several times with a cut down the middle. You open it up and read through the pages the when you are done you unfold it and there is art and more text inside. I also was just notified that my own paper zine is about to be reviewed in the newest issue of Xerography Debt. Xerography Debt is a current zine review magazine filled with addresses you can send requests to. I am hoping to get lots of trades!

I strongly suggest that you take few moments out of your day and send out a nice letter with dollar or two to some interesting people. It is totally fun to receive interesting alternative media in your mail box.

Let's Side Zine Review

6/7/2013

Picture
Let's Side is a mostly music related zine with an emphasis on record collecting. I been missing my record collection and this zine makes me miss it even more. I don't know but for some reason music sounded better on vinyl. It was also fun to dig through bins and find weird old records super cheap. Now many new records and record players are coming out so maybe I should get started collecting again? Does anybody those promo records places used to give out? Like Gremlins records?

The thing I really liked about this zine is the personal stories. Stories about trying to find a certain cord at a thrift shop or meeting a rapper for the first time. One review had a very interesting approach to reviewing. I want to learn this style of review where it's like free flowing poetry and you write about your abstract thoughts and feelings.

One exciting thing about this zine is they are looking for street soldiers in yo hood. By working for them you can receive free t-shirts, hats, tapes and CD's, posters, bumper stickers and concert passes. Send 2 bucks to:
