Saw this documentary at the local art guilds movie night. Really great movie but kind of sad. It's a family circus and every member works full time setting up the tent and equipment and performing. Even a little 5 year old performed in the circus. Because they work so hard and move every two days the kids don't go to school and learn to write or numbers or anything. I love the circus though so this was a great treat for me to see. Check it out!!
This is a psychobilly band from Minneapolis MN. I saw them at The Shakedown Bar in San Diego. Their music was really tight and they played the psychobilly role to a tee. I was bummed how few people were there but at least the members of the other bands stayed and watched them play. Chatted with the lead singer after the show and he was really cool. I really wanted to buy their new album but unfortunately was broke so I gave them a buck for a sticker.
Dead Bundy And The Neat Neat Neats on Facebook. The first thing I liked about this zine is the design. It's like a little 4 page booklet that you can unfold to one big page. It's a good read with plenty of pictures but it is made up of one sheet of paper and I think that is really cool! The premise of the zine is that we should stop doing shit (work) and fuck around. Basically calls for you to disrupt your work place until you get fired. It goes back and forth between being vulgar profanity and academic style writing. Super funny and fun. No address was included so you are on your own trying to find a copy. Thanks Sid Clark for sending this one!
Update! You can request this zine and others by emailing [email protected] Shooting this video was a highlight of my vacation. It was one of my great regrets that I never tried busking at Seaport Village before I left San Diego. I didn't do any magic but got to be a part of busking there and now I feel a lot better. Also got to meet Chanz and talk to him about street performing which was great. Please like Magic Matt on Facebook.
I'm really excited to tell you about the growing punk scene in Beijing and Shanghai China! I got to listen to the album Full Circle which is a split between American defunct band Libyan Hit Squad and Chinese punk band Round Eye. This would be a great party record because the sound varies between tracks and never gets tiring. Stand outs from LHS include the fun song "Rubber Shoes" and "Full Circle" which features Black Flag mastermind Greg Ginn. Round Eye is great upbeat punk rock featuring a sax. I like the songs with lyrics the most like "Kenting" and "I'm So Young". Round Eye has a super full sound that builds with plenty of energy. There is also an awesome Round Eye music video where you can see what a punk show in China looks like. The show looks about the same as here, a bunch of people packed into a small dirty space having the time of there life. The video is set up like a horror flick and was really well done.
Get the record here! See the Round Eye video here! Thank you Sid Clark for sending me this issue. It's a small zine and music review zine. Kinda like a Factsheet Five but with a cool cut and paste layout. And let me tell you there is tons of cool stuff out there! I want to order everyone of these interesting zines and albums. I encourage the reader to be old school and drop a few bucks in the mail and get some of these. Even better make your own zine and send out copies for trade. I ordered a surrealism zine called Paste Eater. Looking forward to receiving it! Send one dollar, stamps or a nice letter to:
Jason Rodgers PO Box 62 Lawrence, MA 01842 Got the new Throat Culture zine in the mail today. It's got movie and music reviews along with some lists and other stuff. There are two awesome movie reviews for "The Shield Around The K: The Story Of K Records" and "Jandek On Corwood". I want to see both these movies real bad!! The music reviews all sound great as well. Robert has a neat reviewing style where it's like a friend telling you about cool stuff and not pretentious at all. I appreciate it. I sent in 4$ to get the new issue of Goofbook which is a comix zine and to get a tape from author Robert's band. I guess tapes are making a comeback which is good because I still have a tape player in my car! Send a dollar to:
Gonk Publishing 2700 White Ave #3 Chico, CA. 95973 Mormo Zine's co-founders reunited and caught awesome shows all over Southern Cali this past week with Chris Medina present in spirit (and on Magic Matt's t-shirt). You can tell by our demonic eyes we were up to no good!! Two punk shows, a comedy show and a magic show all were taken in with many videos soon to come as soon as I get back from vacation. In this photo we are in front of the The Other Place in Anaheim after checking out a free Hungover Sunday punk show.
Went to Palm Desert to visit my good friend Dave and we went and saw the movie The Iceman. It's based off a true story and I had heard of The Iceman from an HBO special. Iceman is a contract killer for the mob who has a family on the side that has no idea what he really does for a living. This movie has incredible acting and was really well shot. It was great to see Winona Ryder again and she looked really good. Iceman was an awesome actor too who I guess has been on HBO shows before. Recommend this movie, check it out!!
