"You don't look like any punk I've ever seen." I've heard this statement a few times through out my life. I try and picture what kind of punks these people might be familiar with. Maybe some X Games looking jock onstage singing about his high school sweetheart. Maybe the petty criminal punk that was popular on TV back in the day. In my current neck of the woods maybe it's the Portland street punk on the corner begging for change.
What does a punk look like? Here is a quote on the nature of punk:

So you may ask yourself, why do so many punk rockers wear a leather jacket with patches and button if punk is about being an individual? Well each patch and button typically represents a band the wearer has seen and partied with. In this way the clothes document the individuals punk rock career so far.
Punk rock is a community and all kinds of people who dress all kinds of ways are welcomed to be a part of it. I would say that attitude is more important then your outfit. The D.I.Y. spirit and willingness to lend a hand to help the scene grow is what makes a person punk rock.
A musician on stage can have any appearance, what's important is that the music moves the listener and comes from the heart. I've seen people from all walks of life take the stage and as long as they are being true to themselves they look great.
My own look is a mix of old timey horror host with a splash of punk. I think people who have been in the heart of the pit and know what punk is about take one look at me a know I'm legit. I'm doing something original (outside of juggelos I guess?) and meaningful to me. So far I have not been excepted by the horror host community. I applied to be on an online horror host channel and was denied because I was hosting music instead of old crappy movies. In that community I guess you have to copy someone else to be excepted. In the punk community as long as are true to yourself you can look however you choose.
