He gets weed fronted to him from a dude who is on house arrest for jacking off into a laundromat dryer.
Rock Opera is a 1999 Austin Texas punk rock comedy thriller movie directed by Bob Ray. This movie is totally awesome!! It tells the story of Toe, a drug dealer in the band Pigpoke. He is trying to raise money selling pot to get his band to go on tour. He gets weed fronted to him from a dude who is on house arrest for jacking off into a laundromat dryer. He sells to all kinds of interesting people who I assume are players in the Austin punk scene. Things is they all are into a different drug and offer Toe a sample, for instance this guy who is dipping cigarettes in Robotussin. The more of these custie drugs he tries the more he gets strung out! It seemed to me like he was making good money but I guess he wanted to be a higher roller so he goes over his suppliers head and contacts his suppliers supplier. Now he's moving even more weed but the new guys is a crazy violent redneck. Shit gets serious dealing with this dude and the movie starts to get pretty intense at this point! Like I said before, this movie is super awesome! It has great music, great acting and a good story. If you are a punk rocker it is basically your duty to make a movie like this documenting your scene. Seriously, every punk scene should have a movie like this. I can't recommend this highly enough! You can purchase it here or get the DVD from Netflix.

Anda Volley is a Folk Rock singer from Boston with poetic lyrics and kinda trippy beats and guitar. This is really beautiful music that instantly brought me into a dream state where I was fantasizing about being in a small bar or coffee house watching Mrs. Volley perform live. I imagine myself after the show stealing a moment where I try and talk business or something. The older I get the more everything doesn't need to be all angry and chaotic. I can truly appreciate lovely music like this and could see myself going out of my way to attend a live concert. I listened to the whole album for review purposes then relistened to several songs again strictly for my enjoyment. Here is a free download of my favorite song "Water Is Heavy" off Anda Volley's debut album "Inside The Ghost Machine":
Track provided by Russian Winter Records.
Black Eyed Vermillion and 1332 Records are releasing a special blue clear vinyl of their album "Hymns For Heretics" limited to 100 copies. This album is the top selling 1332 record of all time! You can get a copy of this beloved classic by supporting the campaign on Kickstarter.
It is important to the whole punk community that this album get pressed! Click here to contribute today!!! If you can't contribute at least please spread the word about this epic undertaking! Cairoglyphs is the techno rap band from Kansas City rapper/producer Ryan Forest. His debut album "The Veil" is released by Russian Winter and is available for five dollar download here. This is rap I can get into! Very trippy electronica dance beats over awesome rhymes. I could see this bumping the dance floor at a trendy dance club, hip hop club and even at a goth bar!! I'm sitting here in my bookstore busting a move, I hope no one is watching through the window LOL!! I am proud to for the first time offer my readers a free download of "Deviance" my favorite song off the album. Check it out!!
Mormo has supported the punk rock and underground movie community for over ten years through print, video and merch. He suffers from psychic borderland syndrome and the only thing that will make him feel better is you signing up for his mailing list at www.mormozine.com.
Juleah is a one woman psychedelic shoegaze band from Austria (where I'm from!). She has a new five song EP out called Entangled And Entwined on Russian Winter Records. You can listen to album online and download the songs for free but you should be cool and give her a dollar because the songs are great! Kinda bluesy and trippy and very relaxing and mellow. I think these songs would be great on a David Lynch soundtrack. It is really amazing that she can make such wonderful music all by herself! Check her out!!
So stoked to announced that The Crash Landings have three new songs available to listen to! Just as I would expect they are all top notch with excellent quality recording and very catchy and well played. My personal favorite of the three is "Just Got Out" which almost has a ska vibe and reminds me of Rancid a bit. Once the band gets a few more songs recorded they will be releasing their first album. These guys are one of the most exciting punk bands I follow and I swear they are going to have a big future. Click here to hear the new songs for yourself!
crashfaster is an electronic band out of San Fransisco that are born from the ashes of discarded technology. They just released their second album "Further" and it is available on CD or digitally anywhere you can find music online. I really like the music. It's very trippy and the album tells a story which is always fun. The story is about an astronaut who is exploring space and in turn has to explore himself and his own humanity to find the truth. The sound is kinda like a mix of old school industrial and modern pop like Owl City or whatever. This is the kind of music I wish I could hear on the soundtrack of Hollywood movies, fresh and new! This video (which the song is not on the new album) is very cool so check it out! On Facebook I liked all these bitchy little punk rock fan pages. Every time they whine and complain I am totally tempted to push the unlike button, which I have done already for many of these pages. People have unliked my fan page as well but whatever!
A common complaint I read often is that people the page owners don't consider "true punk" are wearing punk rock t-shirts. They cry "They probably don't even know what genre their shirt is" or "They probably never even listened to the band". First off, bands like Ramones and Misfits are mainstream as fuck. Their songs are used in nationwide corporate advertising campaigns and probably most Americans have heard at least one of their songs. The bands were super successful and lots of people from all walks of life enjoy their music. This is a good thing! Second, when high profile people wear punk t-shirts it elevates the whole genre. Millions of faggot kids all over the world are more likely to go to their first punk show when someone from a mega band like One Direction wear a punk t-shirt. More heads at concerts means more money for smaller bands who can then can go tour and live out their rock 'n roll dreams. Bigger is better! The idea that punk means unsuccessful and obscure is fucking stupid and needs to stop! Punk should be all inclusive and open to everybody. The bigger it gets the better for everybody involved. If you have a t-shirt I'd mail some to any celeb who will wear it! Made the trip to Boise to see Calabrese live at The Shedder in Boise. This was like my best decision ever because they rocked so hard and it was the most fun I've had all year!!! Calabrese is so horror punk legit, watching them on stage I felt like I was in a horror movie! They played a long set but I was pumped the whole time and was wishing it would never end! One thing I never knew about Calabrese is that they are all brothers which I think is totally cool. They had awesome merch and I bought a sweet poster that I had them all sign and also picked up a rad patch for my friend. Calabrese has a new album coming out October 1st and I will definitely check it out! Trinomikon opened for Calabrese and they were totally fun to watch as well. The upright bass player drew bleeding cuts on his face with marker which is super hardcore! I'm pretty much an old fart and when I go to concerts I pretty much want to stand in back but when this band was on I was really into it and the dance floor was wide open so I got right in front and did my movement/headbanging thing and it was a great time. I guess these guys haven't played in a while and have been together for a while but never recorded. I am going to see if I can help them out as I decided at the show I am going to focus on working in the Boise scene more from now on.
Best show ever!! Check these bands out!! Chicago punk band Control is releasing a new EP entitled "Blood" and I got to take a early listen to it. It sounds awesome! Kinda a mix of horror punk and rockabilly. Very melodic and I could understand the lyrics that are sung well and not screamed. Spooky lyrics and over all dark theme make this a totally fun album! You can check out their first album here. I got to ask them a few questions:
Your recordings sound awesome! Quality sound but still with a raw kind of vibe. Could you describe the recording process? The recording process was fairly simple, we had the songs prepared and practiced going into the studio. The hardest part was finding a studio. We originally planned on recording at the same place where we recorded our first Ep, but it went out of business. We tried booking with the same guy who recorded us the first time, we actually had time booked, but that fell through as well. We basically searched Chicago for a good studio at a great price. We found Sonic Palace. Matt Mercado is awesome, and has a great ear. He was able to flesh out the sounds we were looking for with vague descriptions of how we want to sound. We recorded the songs in about a day and a half with another day of mixing. |
