In the previews for Man Of Steel we see Kevin Costner playing Superman's foster father. He discusses morality with young Superman. Superman needs to decide what kind of man he's going to grow up to be. Is it morally correct to let a school bus full of children die in order to hide his super human abilities? Makes me wonder if the producers of the Superman 2 movie had any kind of morality crisis when they excepted money in exchange for Marlboro cigarette product placement.
Everybody is stoked to see the new Man Of Steel Superman movie. I know I am! There is some controversy over the new suit though. Will the new suit ruin Superman? For me though Superman's reputation was all ready ruined back in 1980. In the previews for Man Of Steel we see Kevin Costner playing Superman's foster father. Yes, Superman was used to market cigarettes to kids. Several times through out the film. Here we see intrepid reporter Lois Lane puffing away on a Marlboro: Comic books help kids understand the difference between right and wrong and what it means to be a hero. Is it wrong to use superheros to market unhealthy products such as cigarettes and junk food? Please leave a comment below letting me know your opinion.

Just rented Shifter, the Moonbeam movie that just came out on Redbox. Like all of Moonbeam's movies, this movie makes up in creativity what it lacks in budget. It's the story of a young boy (who looks like a grown man) who's parents are spies. The boy/man is tired of always having to move and use a fake identity so he is stoked when the parents retire and he gets to have a normal life. Problem is his parents get kidnapped and it's up to him to use all their spy gadgets and magic powers to track them down.
I don't want to give too much away but this movie is packed to the gills with strange/interesting stuff. It's got gypsies, spies, magic, a moped, animals, a rock concert, midgets, time travel, an evil witch and much much more! Perfect entertainment for an imaginative child and adults as well. Check this out!! Moonbeam on Facebook Saw this documentary at the local art guilds movie night. Really great movie but kind of sad. It's a family circus and every member works full time setting up the tent and equipment and performing. Even a little 5 year old performed in the circus. Because they work so hard and move every two days the kids don't go to school and learn to write or numbers or anything. I love the circus though so this was a great treat for me to see. Check it out!!
Went to Palm Desert to visit my good friend Dave and we went and saw the movie The Iceman. It's based off a true story and I had heard of The Iceman from an HBO special. Iceman is a contract killer for the mob who has a family on the side that has no idea what he really does for a living. This movie has incredible acting and was really well shot. It was great to see Winona Ryder again and she looked really good. Iceman was an awesome actor too who I guess has been on HBO shows before. Recommend this movie, check it out!!
This is an e-book available on amazon.com from David Anthony of couchcutter.com. I really enjoyed reading his rants about how much the indie film making scene sucks so I decided to purchase this book (my first kindle e-book purchase). This book not only outlines the problems with the indie film industry but talks about how you can have a career making movies. Topics covered are getting your script, dealing with actors, marketing and a guideline for how your company should operate. I was very inspired by this book and am working towards my next film already tonight.
I will say though that the book didn't cover some of the secret sauce I was expecting. It tells you what you to do to be a successful film maker but doesn't exactly say what to do with the films you make. I was expecting some information about digital distribution through amazon, blip.tv, roku and other services you can get a few pennies through. He does say the best money making ideas aren't in this book and are already in your head and he is right about this. I already know how I plan to distribute and monetize so I didn't need that information anyway. I think he is wrong about twitter though. He says something like "Don't cheat on twitter. When we see someone who follows 1,200 people and has 1000 followers we know what's up." It's the opposite for me. When I see some small time player who has 1,200 followers and only follows 120 people I think, "Wow, what a douche. This guy could care less about his fans." I use techniques to get followers and when I get a person following me who follows 134 people and has 12 followers I think I just struck gold! I highly recommend this book though if you want to have a career making movies. It's very well written and a great value! Watched Dreamscape on the Threshhold+ channel on Roku. I think this movie was the first time I saw video boobs so I decided to check it out again. Dennis Quaid is a down on his luck psychic who gets offered to be in an experiment on dreams. Turns out the President is having bad dreams and a shadow government big shot wants it taken care of.
The dream sequences in this movie are awesome! It's actually a lot of fun. What's weird is in 1984 both this movie and Nightmare On Elm St. had a dream killer with metal nails. Who ripped off who? One think that was really amazing is there was a commercial that asked me a question while I was watching. I used the controller to answer. Lot's possibilities here with maybe choose your own adventure stuff in the future? http://www.facebook.com/thresholdtvnetwork The local art guild has an art movie screening at the theater every last Thursday. I been a fan of Bill Plympton since I was kid seeing his shorts at The Festival Of Animation and The Tune when it came out on video. I respect the guy a lot because I think it's incredible that one guy could make a feature length film mostly by himself. It was inspiring to hear the story of a successful film maker and artist outside of the Hollywood system. This movie didn't hold out on the secret sauce either, giving solid details about how he became a success. The movie did have problems though. Having seen Mr Plympton's films on the big screen I know they should have looked a lot better then the clips I saw in this documentary. There may have been a problem in the transfer but the quality of the clips was poor. Also many of the cameos didn't make sense or weren't funny, even my Hollywood crush Martha Plimpton. Still the film is def worth watching. I'd even like to watch it again and take notes about the secret sauce!
1979 made for TV movie which I watched on Drive In Classics. Psychopathic van driver "The Fiddler" runs woman off the L.A. freeway while a lady reporter with a typical "if it bleeds it leads" attitude exploits the story to advance her career. Some good stunts throughout. Freeways are very scary to me anyway so this movie was effective. Lot's of women's lib stuff here as our hero contemplates if she should stay single or let a man take care of her. Also one expert theorizes the killer thinks women are "too big for their britches". I made it almost to the end then rolled over and listened to the climax which was a bunch of tires squealing.
This is a rare 70's disaster film starring Leslie Nielsen and Shelly Winters. A disgruntled refinery worker doesn't get the promotion he thought he deserved and sabotages the plant, causing the whole city to light on fire. The initial big refinery explosion is crazy because there is several big fires, like four people falling to their death, an old man falls into a pool and all the partitions in a public bathroom fall down as a confused man takes a dump?! Later in the film we see a 20 second close up of an old mans face as he uses a bedpan?! Also weird side plots like an envelope of pictures that leads to three peoples death by fire? This wasn't one of the greats but some money was spent and it def has it's moments. Watched it on Drive-In Classics on Roku.
I'm still on the sci-fi kick so I decided to watch Space Zombie Bingo. This movie has an awesome rockabilly soundtrack I really enjoyed especially the song "I Love Barbeque". It's a retro setting, made to look like a movie from the 50's. It kinda reminded me of Attack Of The Killer Tomatoes in that way. It had really clever writing. This was a pretty big budget film for a Troma flick, there was a big cast and lots of costumes, props and special effects. This movie should be a cult classic but I never really heard of it before today. Awesome that it gets a second life on youtube. Watch it for free (with ads) here:
